About Excellence in Research Administration

Our research administration infrastructure is one of the most critical functions we provide to our faculty and staff.

We want to optimize research administration services at both the central and school and unit levels so that faculty and staff experience efficient interactions. We also maintain conscientious compliance with federal, state, and private funders.

How We’re Doing This

This overhaul project is being conducted in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Idea Generation (Understanding of current state and identification of recommendations)
  • Phase 2: Design and Prioritization of Recommendations
  • Phase 3: Implementation of Initiatives

Phase 1

Phase 1 of this project used a combination of the approaches below to generate ideas related to an effective and efficient research administration.  Rutgers engaged Huron Consulting Group to gather user input and develop these recommendations.

Date and Information Gathering chart

The outcome of Phase 1 was approximately 200 recommendations to create a more efficient and effective universitywide research administration function.  Some recommendations present opportunities that have immediate impact, while others require more long-term management.

Phase 2

During Phase 2, Rutgers leadership and research administration support offices vetted Huron Consulting Group’s recommendations, identifying those that should be implemented during Phase 3.  The identified recommendations were then prioritized into three waves.

Phase 3

Phase 3, which is the current state of the project, focuses on implementing these initiatives through working groups.
